Sleep!

It is SO SO important that you get it right… Personally everybody should be getting 7-8 hours of quality (non interrupted) sleep every night. At the moment, too many people are worrying about exercise and diet.

I very rarely hear people talking about their sleep or that they aren’t getting enough. Living in the 21st century, working different jobs, hitting targets, kids, and having a social life, your probably thinking, “I don’t have time!” But I must stress that if you want to manage stress, lose weight and live a long and happy life then sleep is KEY!

Let’s take a step back in time to the hunter-gatherer when there was none of the 21st century mess that we’re in now. The sun rose and set allowing the hunter-gatherer to have a natural sleep cycle called the circadian rhythm, which governs our sleep, eating patterns, cellular repair and regeneration.

When you upset the rhythm it can mess up all of the above in the first paragraph.

During sleep your body recovers, rejuvenates your muscles, organs, and your whole bodies system accelerate.

What actually makes you sleepy?

That would be the hormones called melatonin which is manufactured in the pineal gland. As light diminishes your body uses serotonin (the feel good hormone) to increase the amount of melatonin so that you can have a good nights sleep. When the sun rises the body lowers melatonin production and increases serotonin and then you wake up happy and refreshed.

Sadly this isn’t the case for many…

As we live on an Island that gets very little sunshine, waking up fresh and alert isn’t a common feeling… even for me.

Your unrested brain can find it very difficult to cope with all day living and find things very emotional at times compared to someone else that gets plenty of sleep.

Chronic sleep deficit can lead to weight gain by affecting how your body processes carbohydrates and by altering hormones that affect your appetite and metabolism.

And a screwed up metabolism means very little fat burning!!

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to make you think like a robot here. I just want you to be aware of how you are currently living your life and how it could be affecting your results mentally and physically.

I’m all for staying up on weekends and watching movie after movie of thrillers, sci fi and horror while munching on my some wholesome foods! icon wink If You Dont Snooze You Lose We all have to live and enjoy what we like to do.

As I say to my kickass members who are getting PHENOMENAL results by the way (especially from my 6 Week Body Transformation), introduce our 80% - 20% rule.

80% of the time you don’t muck about and push the tired mark around 9 – 10 pm. You hit the sack when your body is telling you too.

20% where you stay up with friends, kids, and do whatever makes you happy.

Remember…

If you consistently push the boundaries of sleep then im sorry to say it’s going to be one rocky road to achieving your health and fitness goals.

Here are some my top tips to help improve your sleep.

1. Your bodies cortisol levels are sensitive to light and stimulation so dim the lights in the house, switch of your TV, computer and stop working. Stick the kettle on, have a Tulsi tea and read a book for 10-20 minutes and go to sleep.

2. Get the kids into bed before at reasonable time so they don’t stress (cortisol release) you out before it’s your bedtime.

3. Melatonin is triggered by darkness so switch off all bright lights

4. Try and keep your technology, TV, work, PC out of your bedroom.

5. Keep your room tidy. I know a lot mums that cannot sleep with an untidy house let alone a bedroom. If you haven’t got time to clean then get a cleaner. I have a cleaner, she saves me a shit load of time and I don’t have to stress. BINGO!

6. Eat a clean wholesome diet full of fresh foods. If your liver is toxic you’ll keep needed to wake up every night to go to the toilet for a wee which is pain in the back side trust me. Remember interrupted sleep, ISNT a good night sleep.

7.Minimise processed sugary foods. Adds to the toxic liver and it’s insulin heaven so you’ll wake up feeling groggy and tired.

8. Have a consistent sleeping pattern. Get on top of this, especially on a Sunday night ready for Monday morning.

9. Take good quality supplements that help with stress and serotonin products. I take these DAILY https://www.philrichardsperformance.co.uk/index.php/special-offers/performance-relax-pack.html

10. Come and learn how to improve the quality of your life and body shape at my live event.
