Is The ‘Evil You’ Stopping You From Starting?

Is The ‘Evil You’ Stopping You From Starting?

Being a fitness professional you would probably

think I have the motivation of a marine ready

for battle. Ok that term is probably over doing it a bit

but you get the point… I want to tell you that’s

far from the truth.

Last week I was in a one to one face off with myself.

We can call him ‘Evil J’ or ‘EJ for short…

Back when I was young I used to swim competitively

for around 6 years. Swimming 2 -3 times a week and

regularly playing water polo but once I discovered college,

going out and letting my hair down swimming become none

existent.

I’d been ‘thinking’ about going back to it for several years

but I just never had the time to go. When I say had, it’s

more like, I never made the time to go and do it.

So the years have gone by and I thought to myself

‘shit’, I’ve been saying to myself I’ll go, but never have, now

I’m 25!! How much longer am I going to keep making

stupid excuses about being too busy to go and swim

for an hour twice a week??’

So I pulled my finger out and decided to make a commitment

to start. Last Tuesday to be exact and let me tell you now I

was bricking it. It had been so long since I had done any

swimming. I was arguing with EVIL J in my flat to stop

myself from going. I was arguing with EVIL J in the car on

my way to the pool and I was arguing with EVIL J in the

changing rooms.

I felt scared, I felt like the old members will look at me with a

funny look for leaving and not coming back for so long…

‘It’s going to be too hard, what’s the point, stay home and relax,

it’s late it’s cold and wet outside blah, blah, blah’

Anyway after I got in to the pool and almost lost a lung

it felt fantastic to be back where I wanted to be. Back

doing what I used to do and not thinking about starting.

It felt great to start doing!

You see I’m just like you.

I get scared about new experiences, very nervous and shaky

in new environments and it’s ok to admit that.

I’m not perfect.

And just like you I need help from others too, so I went to my

old club to get the help and boost I needed to get going.
