What Training Clients Has Taught Me

What Training Clients Has Taught Me

I want to be honest with you because there is a lot of HYPE in the fitness industry, which promises to work wonders but fails to truly deliver and leaves a lot of people broken and upset.

Boot camps, insanity, zumba, Bokwa, slim in 6, TRX, P90X and weight watchers the list goes on.

Obviously some of these do work better than others but they are all missing one key element, which I’ll tell you what that is shortly…

For me and the girls at projectu, over the last 2-3 years we have been through a massive learning curve, both physically and mentally.

To truly change yourself it takes commitment and focus.

I’ve had first hand experience dealing with some tough cookies and I can tell you, no home workout DVD program could have done what me and the team teach to help our members.

After thinking about this for quite sometime, I’ve made a list of the things that have really stuck with me from the last 2-3 years of coaching.

The things that I focus on more now than ever before. Things that I think you should focus on more because these are the things people miss out when they attempt to lose weight, get fit and be happy.

Note: All these points interlink in one way or another.

1. Stress on top of stress is not a combination for success

Too often a lot of people are far too stressed out and busy to focus on themselves and it puts our bodies in a constant state of ‘flight, fight or freeze’. We don’t leave ourselves any room for change, so the things to go first is always the fitness and healthy eating.

If you want to change, you must work on changing your environment first, be it work, food, a better relationship, new friend or toxicity from food.

2. Treat food with no respect and it will come and bite you back in the ass.

This sounds obvious but still people don’t do it. Everybody knows what healthy food is but again we still choose the easy way out and opt for processed rather than fresh.

And I link this to point 1 because stress makes us opt for the lazy and easy alternative.

It takes real focus, good social support and the proper coaching to truly stand out from the rest.

3. Food will never replace the need for love, belonging or friendship.

I cannot tell you the amount of times I hear people tell me they pick at things and eat when they are bored to fill in that empty space. Food plays a half decent role in keeping your fingers and mind entertained for a short period, to which shortly after feeling bloated to the point where your tummy is about to explode.

You need to ask yourself mindfully and be aware of the trance like state eating does to you. Next time it happens, stop and ask yourself. What is it that I really need? If it’s food then eat, if it’s because your bored, then run a bath or call a friend in order to fill in the gap.

3. You have the power to change

Belief in ones self can be very hard after putting your trust in a diet and failing time and time again, so why bother, right?? WRONG attitude! You owe it to yourself to keep on doing what is needed so you can be happy, to find a solution to your problem and not leave your needs at the bottom of the pile!

4. If you fail to plan you plan to fail

In this day and age this is essential because without it you will end up a junk food snacker, who makes poor last minute choices either because they are in a hurry and really hungry or because they can’t be bothered as they have no energy to make something decent to eat.

5. Eat without distraction

This will be particularly challenging for those who binge eat, as doing so is commonly hallmarked by shame and secrecy and is usually about as private a behaviour as making love. The idea of someone seeing the binge take place is incredibly uncomfortable, but therefore acts as a useful deterrent if handled correctly.

6. Drink at least 2 litres of filtered water a day

Do not underestimate how frequently people mistake dehydration for hunger, particularly if they lost their connection to what true hunger feels like many moons ago.

7. Eat when your body is hungry

Body hunger is when your actual stomach is hungry and maybe rumbling a little. Then you have mouth hunger. That’s that feeling where you see a yummy looking something or other and your mouth starts watering. You want it but you’re

not actually body hungry. Then there’s mind hunger, and that’s the bitch because mind hunger is the one that tells you need chocolate or sugar when actually you’re not body hungry, you’re just bored. Or lonely. Or that’s what you usually

8. If you want to change your old ways, you need to replace them with new ways that are more in line with your goal

Reducing alcohol intake at the weekend can be hard if you don’t have a replacement for it. After a long week of work, many look forward to coming home to a glass on a Friday but is it inline with your goal?? Probably not, instead run a bath with some bath salts and chill for 30 minutes to

relax. Hormonally it’ll do wonders and help you lose fat, not gain it.

9. Too many people are still eating Less And Training more

To lose fat you need to eat real food and not starve your body. To effectively lose fat, you first need to cleanse and eat the right food so your body has the right nutrition to be able to properly detox your body.

10. A bad day is just a bad day, don’t let it ruin your eating.

It’s easy to say fuck it and eat chocolate when you’re upset. The brains role is to pre-empt threat. By engaging in activities that we already know and are comfortable with, we’d have a pretty clear idea of what is going to happen in the future. By removing the habit, even if it is a really destructive one, we are faced with an unknown outcome and that in itself is threatening.

Think of it as scaffolding. If someone is being propped up by cigarettes, alcohol and chocolate, take all 3 away at the same time and you are more than likely going to end up with a crumpled heap on the floor (and a lightning fast return to cigarettes, alcohol and chocolate). Take out chocolate and replace it with cashews and you’re much more likely to enable yourself to acclimatise to your new healthier snack without setting off the alarm bells.

11. Small changes are better than big ones… only for some!

Everyone handles situations differently. Some respond and perform well under stress, others become a blithering mess.

Make daily changes instead of doing everything at once e.g cut out coffee on day 1, sugar on day two…

12. Take responsibility

It’s important to take responsibility for your own journey. Your success is guided by you, or your coach. We cannot do it for you. A truly great coach empowers someone to be able to make and maintain positive changes for themselves.

13. Reach out for help - Don’t expect people to read your mind - And Thank You

There’s nothing wrong with asking someone for help.

I just wanted to thank my members and past clients for inspiring me to do more to help others! Your commitment to change recently has been amazing and it really is shining through. I have worked with most of you now for 2 to 3 years and the things we have gone through together has been life changing for you and myself. You’ve given me the knowledge, the confidence and the client - mentor relationship along with a tonne of experience, to call myself a true expert in what I do and it is all thanks you.

The new project I have been working on is now finally complete and has all stemmed from our experiences together and will be launched in September.

Within the StarterKit we will show you exactly how to set goals, why we develop habits that you don’t want, why self sabotage and compulsive eating is merely your bodies way of protecting you and much much more.

After the 4 week program you will be able to ditch the fads and have the self confidence to be able to diet and get results with fewer pit-stops and achieve noticeable results.

This is not for those who are looking for another quick fix to lose weight… (because we all know what happens then, right?)

PS Not accepting accountability is the number one reason why few people truly reach the level they desire. That’s the key element that most of these programs are missing.

Zero accountability means no one to push you and support you to move on, along side a team of like minded people that are in the same shoes as you, who have been where you are and know exactly what’s it’s like to feel lost and helpless.

Isn’t it time you did something about it?
